Usage Of Comparative Degree
When we
compare two things we usually use "than"; but when we compare a thing
with attribute or property of the other same thing then we usually
use "than that of ". As we are comparing population with the city in
the sentence there we will have to use "that of". if sentence will be
"The population of Karachi is greater than the population of any other
city in Pakistan." we do not need than that of because we are comparing
population with population not city.
