Learn Direct and Indirect Speech

Direct and Indirect Narration
Here I shall explain the formation of Direct Speech into Indirect Speech.
In
Direct and Indirect, There are two parts of sentences which are known as “Reporting Speech” & “Reported Speech”
Direct Speech
Indirect Speech
He Says,” I am ill.”
He says that he is ill
She says,” My brother is very kind to me.”
She says that her brother is very kind to her.
We say to her, “Your uncle will not hate them.”
We say to her that her uncle will not hate them
 How to recognize “Reporting Speech”
In Sentence which is not in inverted Commas is called reporting speech
Example
He Says,” I am ill.” (Underline sentence is reporting speech)


Basic Rules For Indirect
  1.  Reported speech is not enclosed in quotation marks.
  2.  Use of word “that”: The word “that” is used as a conjunction between the reporting verb and reported speech.
  3.  Change in pronoun: The pronoun (subject) of the reported speech is changed according to the pronoun of reporting verb or object (person) of reporting verb (first part of sentence). Sometimes the pronoun may not change.
In following example the pronoun of reported speech is “I” which will be changed in indirect speech into the pronoun (Subject) of reporting verb that is “he”.
Direct Speech: He Said, “I am going to Karachi”
Indirect Speech: He said that he was going to Karachi

Change the following into reported speech. Attempt any five.

a) 1. The teacher said, “Let’s be kind to the poor and needy”
1. The police said to us, “Show us your identity cards please”
2. He said, “Will you follow a fool’s whims?”
3. He said to him, “Be kind enough to overlook this mistake.”
4. He shouted, “Leave me alone.”
5. He said, “Alas, I am undone.”
6. Alice said, “How thoughtful of you.”
